Biography

Lorenzo Ferrándiz began conducting after a successful career as a percussionist, during which he had the privilege of playing with the most prestigious conductors of the last two decades with the renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. His activity as a conductor covers a wide variety of styles and is characterized by an intensity and interpretative precision, forging profound connections between composers intentions and modern audiences.

Principal conductor of CrossingLines Ensemble, Barcelona's leading contemporary music ensemble, and guest conductor of Ensemble New Babylon of Bremen, groups with which he has premiered and recorded many pieces as part of his commitment to promote the creation of new works. His last recording is a CD of the composer Benet Casablancas for NAXOS label with excellent reviews by specialized critics.

He has conducted the Orchestra Ciudad de Granada, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Extremadura's Orchestra, Córdoba's Orchestra, Catalunya's Philharmonic Orchestra and the Esmuc's Orchestra, among others. He has also led the L'Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, as well as numerous chamber groups including Quartetto Maurice, Experimental Funktion, Frames Percussion, Barcelona Modern Ensemble, CrossingLines Ensemble and the Ensemble New Babylon, with whom he has performed at prestigious festivals such as the Contemporary Music Festival of Huddersfield, Sampler Series y Subsònic de L'Auditori (Barcelona), Mixtur, Outside o Series 20/21 (Madrid).

After having been assistant conductor to prominent maestros such as Josep Pons or John Adams at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, his growing interest in stage music led him to conduct in Darmstadt, the opera Andrómeda Encadenada by Agustí Charles and to debut in the Óh!pera of the Gran Teatre del Liceu with the premieres of Hi ha monstres que viuen per a la seva curiositat by Carlos de Castellarnau y Contradir la Nit by Montserrat Lladó.

In 2013 Lorenzo Ferrándiz was a finalist at the I Conducting Competition of the Córdoba's Orchestra and In 2014 he won the award of the musicians at the III International Competition of Orquestral Conducting Eduard Toldrà. Conducting CrossingLines, the piece "Fixacions II" composed by Carlos de Castellarnau won the Competition JukeBoxx NewMusic Award 2014/15.

Aside from his work as a conductor, Lorenzo Ferrándiz maintains a long career as a renowned pedagogue in percussion and chamber music having been professor at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Conservatory of Aragón. Currently he is teaching at the Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco (Musikene) and at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Esmuc), where he also conducts the Master's Instrumental Ensemble.
